THE BATTLE
Spiritual growth often invites a greater awareness of the struggles we face, including unwanted thoughts or temptations.
It's natural to experience challenges in your spiritual journey, especially when you’re seeking to deepen your relationship with Jesus.
I’m learning that spiritual growth does not always feel like steady progress. There are moments when an unwanted thought appears, a temptation feels stronger than expected, or an old struggle seems to return just when I thought I had moved past it. These moments can reveal my need for Christ’s strength rather than my own ability to control every battle.
Jesus spoke about the danger of leaving the heart empty without allowing God to fill and transform it. “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’” — Luke 11:24-26. This passage reminds me that freedom is not simply about removing what is harmful; it is about surrendering my whole life to the presence of God.
Scripture also gives a steady promise when temptation comes: “No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13. God’s faithfulness does not mean we never face struggles. It means we are not abandoned in them. He provides grace, wisdom, and a way to endure.
I often notice this in ordinary moments: a difficult conversation, a frustrating delay, or a quiet moment when my thoughts begin to wander. These small spaces reveal where my heart needs deeper dependence on God. James reminds us, “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7. Resistance begins with surrender. We do not overcome temptation by relying only on determination, but by remaining close to the One who strengthens us.
As I return to prayer, Scripture, worship, and fellowship, I am reminded that transformation is God’s work within me. His Word becomes a steady anchor, shaping my thoughts and drawing my heart back toward Christ. The journey of faith is not about never struggling; it is about learning where to turn when struggles come.
Ask Yourself:
Where might God be inviting me to surrender more fully instead of trying to overcome in my own strength?
